
The first time I visited Mexico was 1987. My mentor, the Patron of Brazilian education, Paulo Freire, had invited me that year to speak at a conference in Cuba, and while in Havana I was honored to meet teachers from Mexico who, I found out later, had translated some of my essays into Spanish. They were aware that I would be speaking in Havana and to my surprise presented me with small gifts of appreciation.
